How to identify signals in Social Media

Reddit is one of the clearest places to study real problems.

What to look for

Repeated questions
If the same question keeps appearing in different threads, that is often a strong sign of ongoing demand.

Long discussion chains
Long comment threads usually mean the problem matters enough for people to stay engaged.

Frustration and pain
Look for people describing what is hard, expensive, slow, or confusing.

Workarounds
If many users explain hacks, spreadsheets, templates, or manual fixes, that usually points to an unmet need.

What most people get wrong

Most people search for opinions and stop there.

But the stronger signal is not the opinion. It is the repeated pattern behind the discussion.

If the same frustration appears across multiple posts, different users, and different time periods, that is much stronger than one popular post.

Simple example

Imagine you search a niche subreddit and keep seeing:

  • • “What is the fastest way to validate this?”
  • • “I don’t want to build first and waste time.”

That is not just engagement. That is a repeated problem with real emotional weight behind it.

Decision rule

If the same problem appears multiple times, across multiple users, with frustration or urgency attached to it, that is a signal worth testing.

If the community is active but the problem does not repeat, the signal is weaker.
